Church Street is Toronto’s Gay Village

Church Street is Toronto’s Gay Village

Don’t be fooled by the street’s name. It’s not a holy street where you pray and shout to the Lord for mercy, forgiveness and favours.

Church Street is, yes, Toronto’s Gay Village! It’s the gayest in Canada (unless Montreal would argue) and it’s where the biggest party in June happens, the center of Pride celebrations.

If you are a gay tourist visiting this city during Pride Weekend celebrations, be aware that the streets of Church and Wellesley are full of things to do. At night, parking spaces/garages turned into one hell of outdoor raves that play different dance tunes that cater to every one’s taste of music. If you don’t like one, move on and find another spaces where the raves are. World-renowned DJ’s will spin, flaunting their sexy abs and grinding their asses to seduce you. Stop staring and concentrate on the sexy next to you. And dance like the world has never seen before.

To answer a reader’s query about gay bars and places to check out during Pride weekend, I have these few bars in mind where to spend the nights of rainbow debauchery in the gay village. I’m not an expert but  I’ll give you this list that will surely guarantee you—to sweat glitter. And maybe, go home with someone in tow.

WOODY’s – Hot guys galore
This gay bar is an institution in the village. It’s not a big place but it’s like the cathedral in Church Street where everybody goes or drops by on a Friday or Saturday night. It’s the bar where patrons consume more beers than any other bars in Ontario–or maybe in Canada. Their waiters own a six-pack and are shirtless in most nights. Check out their Best Ass contest on weekends where, sometimes, straight women push their boyfriends on stage to join for the fun of it. Soft porn are on tv screens.

FLY – Dance like you’re in Babylon
It’s my favorite place to dance. Good dance tunes, good vibes—and mixed crowd. If you’re following the ground-breaking TV show, “Queer as Folk”, this is where they shot that highly-awesome Babylon Club. Always crowded on weekends but that’s the point, right? Fly will never disappoint you. If you’re disappointed, don’t get back at me. It’s just you. LOL…

TANGOS AND CREWS – the Queens and divas rule here
If you wanna see Ru Paul-worthy kind of drag queens and shows, look no further. You can dance and sing live or lip synch with the super fabulous queens here. They’ll surely make you happy and entertained.

FLASH – Always keeps your eyes open
Do hard-rock bodies in their skimpy hot undies turn you on? Or even show their “thing” that will send you vibrations down to your inner core? This is where guys go when they want to see go-go dancers titillating them. LOL… Enough said.

GOODHANDY’S – Pansexual playground
Leave your insecurities and narrow minds outside before you push that door. This place is not for the gay bitches and divas but for those who are sexually liberated without drama attached to their system. Go in and be among them for a night. Check their website for nightly/weekend “live shows” that would blow your mind away—and keep you at the edge of your space.

EAGLE – Bears and Leathermen
Friendly and no attitude atmosphere here. The tiny patio upstairs is a smoker’s lounge. Grab a drink and wander around the dark room where everything happens for a reason. It’s dark, so, what do you expect?  LOL…

SLACK’S – a lesbian bar
The most popular lesbian bar in The Village. The open concept of this resto-bar makes it an awesome place for lesbians to hangout with the rest of their pack. I was here once and I loved it. During the Pride Week, it’s packed, sweaty and just fun. I’ve never seen a lot of lesbians in one place in my life but here. 🙂

REMEMBER:
Bring your ID card when you’re in the village.
Those bulky, hunky guards won’t let you in no matter how you enchant them with your charms. Play the “I’m a tourist. I’m not aware.” card— who knows, they might nod. It just didn’t work out with me. LOL…
